Our Simply Sensational opening night features spectacular works by classical music’s most cherished composers. Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4 has been acclaimed as “the most admirable, singular, artistic and complex Beethoven concerto ever”. Widely acclaimed pianist Ian Parker joins the SSO as the soloist for this performance. Brahms’ Symphony No. 4 is a masterpiece that brings together the full forces of the symphony orchestra in what has been described as his most passionate and dramatic work.

Sure to thrill the ears and spark the imagination, this program opens with the prelude to Hansel and Gretel Humperdinck’s self described “fairytale opera,” followed by one of Ravel’s most famous orchestral works Mother Goose Suite. For a finale, we present the incredible symphonic masterpiece Scheherazade, by Russian composer Rimsky-Korsakov, with its lush textures and exotic harmonies reminiscent of 1001 Arabian Nights, from which the piece takes its title.

Strap on your spurs, get your horse to ‘giddy up’ and take a musical journey through the Wild West as the SSO presents music from well known Western movies and TV shows, as well as some popular Western-themed classical works. This memorable night includes themes from The Lone Ranger, Bonanza, High Noon, Oklahoma! The Alamo, and Copland’s Rodeo. Get in to the spirit by dressing in your favourite western attire, cowboy hats welcome!

Join us for a tribute to Spain, a warm and vibrant country that has inspired important and beloved music. The program includes the energetic Bootleggers’ Tarantella by Canadian composer John Estacio and Bizet’s Carmen Suite. Celebrated violinist Erika Raum performs Lalo’s Symphonie Espagnole, a colourful, virtuosic work in five movements for violin and orchestra. The finale is none other than Ravel’s most famous work Bolero which is without a doubt a Simply Sensational conclusion to another exciting season with the Sudbury Symphony Orchestra.
