PROGRAM NOTES:
Peter and the Wolf by Sergei Prokofiev (1891-1953) Peter and the Wolf introduces the instruments of the orchestra to children. Prokofiev’s interest was sparked by Natalia Satz, the director of the Moscow Children’s Theatre, who suggested creating a merry show where music would alternate with lively narrative. Prokofiev wrote the story, based on a folk tale, with each character represented by the distinctive tune and timbre of an instrument. For instance, the courageous, resolute Peter is represented by a string quartet, the grumbling but good-natured grandfather by a bassoon, the bloodthirsty wolf by three horns, and the hunters’ blunderbusses by timpani. Prokofiev’s gift for melody is evident throughout this “symphonic tale,” which was first performed in Moscow in 1936.
