“I would teach the children music, physics and philosophy, but the most important is music, for in the patterns of the arts are the keys to all learning.” —Plato
Music can touch the hearts and minds of every individual, and all people should be given the opportunity to experience it. It is one of our most important aspirations to bring classical music to as many people as possible through our Outreach and Education Program.
In the classroom…
We begin by providing a dynamic in-class performance program, available to all the schools in our area. The response to outreach presentations is overwhelmingly enthusiastic from both teachers and students. Outreach presentations are high-energy and interactive, and the students’ eyes and ears are opened to the wonderful world of music.
- Outreach Presentations are presented to individual classes, or for entire schools.
- Presentations focus on an introduction to the orchestra and instrument families (i.e. brass, woodwinds, strings, and percussion), emphasizing string instruments.
- Open and fun-filled discussions include how instruments are made, how to become a musician, and the benefits of musical education.
- Question periods are a must, and “hands-on” activities are encouraged, such as giving students the opportunity to try a student-sized instrument.
- The instructors charge no fee for outreach presentations; however an honorarium of fifty dollars to the Sudbury Symphony Orchestra would be greatly appreciated to help keep this program running.

On the streets…
Bringing music to the public means everybody, so we’re taking it to the streets! Through our innovative new program, Hear and Now, you may encounter random acts of music throughout the City of Greater Sudbury. We’re turning heads, and ears, to the sounds of the great works of classical, romantic and modern composers in places where you’d least expect it…
