Dear Music Lover,

I’ve got one thing to say about what’s going on at the SSO: Wow.

Wow, firstly because we have a new performance space where we have double the seats! Our new location since the fall of 2007, Glad Tidings Auditorium, is a beautiful church sanctuary and a spacious stage where we have lots of room to do our thing. With two huge screens displaying the orchestra in action, every seat is a good view. This season we’re taking advantage of them in our Christmas show, where the orchestra will be performing The Snowman – a magical animated film about a boy and his snowman. My kids would go crazy for this one!

Wow again, because we’ve expanded our series to six concerts, and each and every concert is a gem. And speaking of those unbelievable concerts—

Wow once more, because of the incredible programme that we’ve got lined up for you. We’ve got everything from great masterworks like Sibelius and Brahms, to spooky Hallowe’en music for the whole family; fiery tangos from the streets of Argentina, to the music of Elton John. We’ve got soloists that will knock your socks off with their virtuosity and versatility, and some new stuff that will make you rethink the boundaries of orchestral playing.

If you’re a first-time symphony goer, let me bring you up to date. Anyone, and everyone, is welcome at our concerts. You can dress up if you want, or you can wear what you’d wear to the Wolves game – except it’s a lot warmer at our concerts. Anything goes, as long as you’re enjoying the music. Gone are the days of strict, polite applause. Our regulars will tell you that the best way to get the blood flowing is by clapping as loud as you can – a whistle or two helps get the air moving too. We’re not about following the rules; we’re about following the music.

This is such a great time to be in the arts in the City of Greater Sudbury. This community is such a fertile atmosphere for artistic growth, and the Sudbury Symphony Orchestra is blossoming. Join us, and bring your friends! Because there’s one more Wow that I have to say, and it’s for all the hard-working musicians on the stage, who make the music happen. Wow.

All of this and more await you at the next concert. Remember, we are your Sudbury Symphony Orchestra.

Looking forward to seeing you soon,

Mæstro Vic.
